Singer, songwriter, and creative director of her own career, Luiza Lian has established herself over the past decade as one of the most successful music artists in the Brazilian contemporary art scene. Hailing from the independent music scene in São Paulo, she has released her albums through the same label, Risco, which has also revealed artists like O Terno, Tim Bernardes, Quartabê, and Ana Frango Elétrico. Luiza Lian has been building a body of work that expands the concepts of music beyond sound recordings, integrating elements from visual arts, cinema, theater, photography, fashion, digital art, and performance in her live performances and music videos. The upcoming release of her fourth album, "7 Estrelas | quem arrancou o céu?" ("7 Stars | Who Tore the Sky Off?") solidifies her partnership with music producer Charles Tixier, with whom she has built her musical reputation on her most recent albums, "Oyá Tempo" (2017) and "Azul Moderno" (2018).
Her work questions the transformations of our time and how they reflect upon us, whether from a spiritual, political, or aesthetic standpoint. By merging elements of Brazilian music, electronic music, and pop music with a focus on the lens of religious syncretism, she goes against the parameters of the current Brazilian market, where escapist seems to dictate the rules for the audience. Instead, she explores the pains and pleasures of life, always raising existential questions in a sensitive manner, as if inviting the listener to reflect. Her lyrics are autobiographically inspired, but she sings them subtly, bringing the viewers into her proposal.
After a more conventional debut album, Luiza started working on what would be her second album, but her connection with one of the album's producers, drummer Charles Tixier, led her to remix songs that had not been released. Before finalizing the other album, she created an almost impromptu album alongside the producer. "Oyá Tempo" would be the segue to the final transformation of "Azul Moderno," where she managed to establish her artistic relevance in the scene without needing special collaborations or following any market trends. Instead, she created a sonorous universe that was both dense and delicate, translated into theatrical performances that blended mapped projections, laser lighting, and scenic minimalism. She uses the concept of "expanded cinema" to provoke the audience with bold and unexpected movements.
With "Azul Moderno," the recognition from music critics came in the form of awards - it won Album of the Year from the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (Paulista Association of Art Critics) and the Multishow Award for Best Recording of the Year - but it also resonated with the public. She performed at major Brazilian festivals and made international appearances. She has nearly two million listeners and ten million streams on digital platforms.
Composed in 2019 and reworked over four years, the album is another production from Luiza’s Brazilian RISCO record label and her first international release with ZZK Records, and will be launched during a series of shows in August at Sesc Pompeia in her hometown of São Paulo, performances in which Luiza delves even deeper into the exploration she proposed in the live version of her previous album.
7 Estrelas | quem arrancou o céu? is out on vinyl and all digital platforms.
