Nuevos Rios

Reco Reco y Canalon de Timbiqui con Nidia Gongora presents: Nuevos Ríos

At the edge of the jungle and the Timbiquí River, Reco Reco met Canalón de Timbiquí and Nidia Góngora in the spring of 2022. From this encounter, Nuevos Ríos was born—a project where Tropical Bass intertwines with the ancestral traditions of Colombia’s Pacific coast. Their original repertoire is rooted in Afro-Colombian chants, percussion, and rhythms, enriched by electronic textures and global influences. The result is a powerful musical gesture: a human and artistic meeting that flows across continents, oceans, and rivers, with the moon bearing witness to a cultural exchange and a rebirth of sound.

Genesis of the Creation

In April 2022, in Timbiquí, at the Hotel Bella Sofía, Nuevos Ríos was born from a week of creation in the heart of Colombia’s Pacific coast. There, the two groups met, discovered one another, composed together, recorded their music, and shared daily life, surrounded by the lush rhythm of the river.

Two months later, in June 2022, during a visit to Puylaurens, France, Nidia Góngora joined Reco Reco once again to record new pieces and expand the Nuevos Ríos repertoire. These songs capture the rarity and emotional intensity of their encounter—shaped after long months of isolation and distance. Beyond the blending of acoustic and electronic sounds, Nuevos Ríos draws from ancestral African rhythms, reminding us that this music is not only heritage but a living, breathing force in the present moment.

In Colombia, traditional music speaks of the elements—the moon, the tides, the river—merging the sacred with everyday life. Nuevos Ríos carries this spirit forward, reimagined through a cross-cultural collaboration that bridges continents and generations.
